Worker health checks
About worker health checks
When it comes to improving health, awareness is the best place to start.
WorkHealth is giving employers the opportunity to offer their workers free, confidential and convenient health checks.
The benefits of providing health checks include:
- They're fast and they happen in the workplace
- They encourage workers to learn about the state of their health and recommend actions that are easy and practical to implement
- They give employers the chance to kick-start health and wellbeing programs in the workplace
By participating in health checks, workers get to learn more about their risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. WorkHealth health checks look at factors that impact on personal health such as diet, exercise, smoking and alcohol consumption.
What happens during health checks?
A health professional visits the workplace to conduct health checks. Each worker’s health check results remain strictly confidential. During the health check participating workers will:
- Complete a short questionnaire
- Have their waist circumference, blood cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar measured
- Receive immediate information and advice based on their on results
Workers at high risk of type 2 diabetes may be eligible to take part in free lifestyle intervention programs to help reduce their risk.
Participation in WorkHealth programs by employers and their workforce is voluntary and privacy is protected.
If you have already offered health checks to the majority of workers in your workplace, you may be eligible to apply for a workplace health promotion grant.
Availability of worker health checks
WorkHealth is now available in all regions across Victoria.
WorkHealth has a network of endorsed service providers to deliver worker health checks. View current endorsed service providers here.
If you are interested in receiving worker health checks but are not located in an area where health checks are currently available, you can register your interest in worker health checks here. You will be contacted by WorkHealth once health checks become available in your area.
Applying for worker health checks
Employers are eligible to apply for worker health checks if they are a Victorian business or have Victorian based operations and pay a WorkSafe Injury Insurance premium, or are an approved WorkSafe self-insurer.
Employers should refer to the worker health check guidelines for employers and will need to accept the WorkHealth funding terms and conditions as part of the application process.
Small and medium businesses
Organisations with an annual remuneration of less than $10million will be fully reimbursed for the costs of health checks, meaning they are free.
After you have applied WorkSafe will select a suitable endorsed service provider on your behalf. Please contact WorkSafe on 1800 136 089 if you have any questions.
Large businesses
For organisations with an annual remuneration of $10million or above, health checks will range between $30 and $85 per worker (including GST). WorkSafe will reimburse $30 (including GST) per worker towards the total cost of these health checks.
A WorkSafe representative will contact you to assist with the selection of an endorsed service provider.
If you would prefer, you can apply using our paper based application form.
When applying using the paper based form, if you would like to offer health checks at more than one worksite you will need to complete the project location template.
