WorkSafe Victoria – feelingood@work

WorkSafe Victoria employs more than 1000 people across 14 sites, including regional Victoria.

Profile, visibility and ownership

"We always had a range of activities which were promoted as 'wellbeing activities'.  However we did not have a strategic focus or central point of reference for programs and information."
Dale Nissen, Manager Employee Health and Safety, WorkSafe Victoria

nullAn important aim has been to consolidate all current programs under a single banner with a new website and a new identity feelingood@work.  This has been supported by widespread promotion.  Stories and images bring the program to life.  Local champions help motivate participation.

Activities to address key health risks

The program focuses on major national health risks and is informed by local data relating to injuries and worker needs and interests.  Key issues include:

  • Mental health
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes, and
  • Musculoskeletal disorders

A wide range of activities which aim to motivate, educate and involve staff.  They are grouped under five main areas:null

  • Physical Wellbeing –including gym reimbursement, fitness squads, weight loss programs, quit smoking programs and fruit@work
  • Emotional Wellbeing– including an employee opinion survey; confidential counselling support; and information sessions by BeyondBlue
  • Community – including development of a volunteering policy and green office program
  • Social – including an active, well supported social club, and
  • Financial – including provision of information on employee benefits and retirement planning.

"We were not afraid to give things a try for example fruit@work, and the Global Corporate Challenge."
Dale Nissen, Manager Employee Health and Safety, WorkSafe Victoria

And the results?

Results are measured through participant feedback, including an online employee survey.  Participants have reported a range of health benefits as well as improved interaction across teams.  The program has also had an impact in terms of attracting and retaining staff.

"One of the biggest challenges is getting the highest risk people on board."
Dale Nissen, Manager Employee Health and Safety, WorkSafe Victoria

 Strengths of the program

  • Branding and marketing approach. This creates a “home base” for the feelingood@work initiative and gives the program colour and personality.
  • Senior management engagement. This is vital and has been encouraged through their personal involvement in health checks.
  • Program linkages.  Aspects of the program build on each other and can help motivate participation.  For example participation in events such as the Global Corporate Challenge is motivated by the health checks.  It’s about being strategic and maintaining momentum.
