Victoria University

Victoria University employs more than 3000 people across 12 campuses in Melbourne’s west.

Why we’re doing it

Evidence that developing and implementing a staff health program results in reduced absenteeism, staff turnover and physical and psychological injuries and increased staff engagement and productivity prompted Victoria University to initiate their own staff health program.

"It is important to ensure that staff feel valued and get a clear message about their value - a wellness program is an important aspect of valuing staff"
Geoff Hurst, General Manager OHS, Human Resources, Victoria University

It was felt that a focus on wellness would improve the health of staff and prevention of many illnesses. Victoria University specifically wanted to reduce the number of psychosocial claims as well the initiation of preventive measures including a focus on the prevention of the onset of type 2 diabetes.

What we’re doing

Victoria University runs targeted programs to address particular health risks, including:

  • Weight Watchers at work
  • Diabetes LIFE! Program, and
  • Flu vaccinations

It also offers general wellness oriented activities such as:

  • Lunchtime sport
  • Discounted Gym membership
  • An annual wellness Forum, and
  • Student serviced clinics (massage, hairdressing, osteopathy, beauty treatments, exercise physiology, etc.).

How we’re doing it

Victoria University’s main aim was to adopt a more targeted and strategic approach by consolidating already existing programs.  This included the development of a Wellness Cooperative with representatives from Faculties and Departments across the University. The challenge for the University lies in meeting the different needs of the many employees across multiple campuses. In current development is a Wellness Improvement Plan that will see strategic and targeted initiatives implemented across the University.

Strengths of our program

While there are no definitive results, it has captured the interest of our workforce and the university’s management. Initial gains include positive comments and feedback about the specific activities and the initiative in general. Employees feel that the University cares for, and is willing to invest in their health and wellbeing and the University has experienced a further positive shift in the culture of Health & Safety.
